Talk to me about... my research:

As a committed mountain bike racer, nutritionist, strategic thinker and a type 1 diabetic myself, I believe that measuring aspects of your health, knowing your behavior and using that information for personalized advice will be the future of food and healthcare. For the Dutch knowledge institute TNO, I set up a large international research consortium together with Wageningen Research that investigates the technical and social innovations that will enable personalized nutrition through consumer empowerment. This pre-competitive public private consortium is unique in combining different scientific expertise across the whole value chain of personalized nutrition and using real world field labs.

Talk to me about… something people may not know about me:

I am a keen mountain bike racer and race competitively in the amateur classes myself, run an amateur mountain bike team with a friend of mine and give MTB skills training for a cycling club as a volunteer.

Talk to me about... my research:

Maintaining health and delaying disease onset result from complex interactions between genetic makeup, behavior, socioeconomic, and environmental factors.  Our multidisciplinary, international teams have been developing a more holistic approach to research summarized as systems nutrition. We use standard and emerging computational methods to integrate and analyze physiological data with measures of diet intake and physical activity while accounting for the built environment and genetic makeup.

Talk to me about... my research:

I am a psychobiologist specializing in the role of food choice and food reward in human appetite. The principles of my approach are to examine the relationship between food and eating behaviour in the context of the whole person and to recognise that individual variability in response to food is crucial to understanding appetite control; it is not one size fits all. Eating behaviour is the product of a psychobiological system with influences across diverse scientific domains from genes to the environment rather than processes operating in isolation.

Talk to me about… my research

My research interests are concerned with understanding food related behaviour and span consumer food choice (including sensory factors), nutrient/food mediated psychological functions and attitudes toward food and eating. Most recently, my interests have focussed on understanding the public perspective and consumer response to personalised nutrition. I was part of the EU Food4Me project team which employed a triangulated design to understand public perceptions and attitudes toward personalised nutrition as well as psychological response to the personalised nutrition internet–based intervention. The research results, therefore, are relevant to dietary health promotion and to the food and health industry.

Talk to me about… something people may not know about me:

When not doing research, I can be found in the kitchen, catering for my sons, Conor and Rory, or roaming the north Antrim coast with my dog, Rex.

Alyson Greenhalgh-Ball

Senior Director of Global Health and Wellness
Kellogg Company

Talk to me about... my business:

I am passionate about health, wellness and the role that food and technology can play here. I lead Health and Wellness for Kellogg’s globally and my main task is setting our strategic direction and how this then practically turns into reality across the various business units, brands and food categories across the World. This includes food reformulation, how we communicate to our consumers and engage with our external partners . It’s an exciting time whereby consumers, customers are more engaged with health and food than ever before, given our roots in Wellness and plant based sustenance I am proud to be part of the team taking this forward moving from a narrow definition of Nutrition to a broader wellbeing agenda to consider the social, cultural and ecological dimensions of our food.

Talk to me about... something people may not know about me:

I am a busy working mum who juggles a pretty full-on agenda, lots of travel with two gorgeous children Mia and Teddy.  Recently I have been helping Mia, who is currently applying for University - and boy, it’s a steep learning curve navigating what course (she wants to study Medicine), what University, and the all-important how the student accommodation ranks.

Talk to me about… my research

My research focuses on ‘what is health, how can health be quantified and how to measure effects from nutrition and lifestyle on health’.  I joined TNO in 2006 and works with a bioinformatics research group active in the field of nutrigenomics and systems biology. I am acting as principal investigator in several public private partnerships focusing on systems health applying genomics technology, bioinformatics, standardised infrastructures and artificial intelligence. In the last 5 years most of my research focuses on personalized nutrition. This included the coordination of the evidence-based scientific advice system that has been implemented by the American personalised nutrition start-up company ‘Habit’ (https://habit.com/). In 2016 Iwas awarded the ‘Excellent researcher of 2015’ for her work on personalised nutrition. I have a PhD in medical sciences from Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center.

Talk to me about…something people may not know about me

I have my own personal story around personalised nutrition… and furthermore that I’d like to play volleyball, to do bootcamp and I’d like to travel (preferably adventurous long walking trails in the middle of nowhere)
